KPT News January 2012

• This Specialist decorative paint scheme by KPT and Howell and Bellion at Leytonstone Church continues. Historic painted gold leaf stars been uncovered above the font and, by sheer coincidence, these match the proposed scheme for the new painting onto the vaulted porch ceiling, which is to have gold stars on blue night sky!
• KPT, in collaboration with SMC ( a communication/entertainment installer), have entered a new home cinema they designed into the Cedia Awards 2012.
• We have also entered Spains Hall into the RICS 2012 Conservation Award.
• Thatching of the Rotunda has been completed.  The vertical, wide board oak cladding is currently being fitted to the exterior and the oak windows are also being installed.
• Architect Monica Corcoran passed the Construction Skills Managerial and Professional Health and Safety Test with flying colours.
• The works at Finchingfield Guildhall with Fairhurst Ward Abbotts are at an exciting stage. Some of the modern windows and cement render have been removed at the rear, exposing the frame. We have found two more ovolo moulded, 15th Century windows in the Guildroom and a high status 15th Century oriel window on the front façade! This is fantastic news, as the Guildhall is revealing more of its history and past use every day.   
• The new Kitchenette, WC and Balcony building works at Bush End church, with R J Pinnock, are continuing and the new breather floor has been laid.
• The re-roofing of a C15th moated Hall House, with R J Hogg, is underway, with the stripping of the clay peg tiles. This will expose the beautiful crown-post roofs and later C16th purlin roofs, which we’re looking forward to seeing.
• The complete renovation works of a Regency house/former pub in Essex, with Illife & Sons, is still on-site, with the cement render removed and the frame exposed. This has revealed an elm frame, which will be repaired like-for-like with British elm. The new breather perimeter floors have also been laid, which will ensure the old frame stays dry. 
• We received Planning permission/Listed Building Consent for a new pitched roof (replacing a flat roof) over a swimming pool in Fulbourn.
• We received Listed Building Consent for internal alterations to a 16th Century house in Saffron Walden
• The glass/oak screened room in the South Aisle at Great Chesterford church is complete.  Pop in and have a look!

• Great Chesterford Church has a new carved oak and modern glass screen enclosing their new meeting space which we designed. Lodge and Sons have nearly finished this, so do pop into the church a have a look!  This project is due for completion during January.
• The Building works at Bush End Church have started on-site with R J Pinnock & Sons, to create a new Kitchen, WC, tower balcony and staircase. The works include some lovely new oak joinery.  These new facilities will be a welcome addition to this lovely little church opposite Hatfield Forest. 
• The first month of building works continue at Finchingfield Guildhall. The demolitions have started and the site hut is up! This is an exciting repair and restoration project, which has been funded by Heritage Lottery and English Heritage, to create a museum, library and meeting room!  
• Stripping off of the cement render has commenced to the rear of the frame, exposing the C15 timber structure.   At high level, the oak seems to be in fairly good condition, while the West end has some rot in the sole plate and lower studs, which will require some splice oak repairs.  The two old inglenook fireplaces have been exposed, and the brickwork is in good condition.  FWA Conservators have also done some samples to see if we can remove the black staining from the oak frame.  This has been successful.  The brick pammets have been lifted from the floors and saved for re-use later.  In the passageway, we found some old lath and plaster that survived stripping during the 1950’s, so this will be preserved.
• The thatchers, Dodson Brothers, have arrived to thatch the Rotunda.  They are using traditional drum threshed long straw. This is attached on every second run with a sway.  Metal ties, the modern-day equivalent of the hazel staples, are screwed into the rafters to help hold the sways in position, which in turn hold the long straw in place.  Dodson Bros grow their own long straw in Cambridge.  Once the straw is firmly in position, a trimmer is used to push the ends into place, giving a firm layer.  When all the layers are in place, a hedge trimmer (replacing the traditional shears ) is used to trim the ends, giving a very tidy finish.  Finally, the eaves will eventually be finished with two rows of hazel stitching and the ridge piece goes on last, in Dodson’s own distinctive pattern, fixed in place with hazel.   It is estimated that 3 tons of straw will be required to thatch this roof.

• Finchingfield Guildhall: The winning Building Contractor has been announced as: Fairhurst Ward Abbott. This exciting Heritage Lottery/ English Heritage funded conversion project is due to start on-site in December. See their website www.finchingfieldguildhall.org.uk
• The construction of our unusual timber-framed round building is continuing at quite a pace with R. J. Pinnock and Sons with the topping-out ceremony this month.
• The new glazed screen and meeting room in Great Chesterford Church being constructed by Lodge and Sons is nearing completion and looking fabulous.
• The Georgian Orangery and underground Cinema/Games Room we designed is being built by Cubbitt Theobald. It’s looking very elegant and is nearing completion.
• The Victorian Stable block indoor swimming pool building is completed
• Planning permission and Listed Building Consent were approved for the alterations to Braxted Park (Grade II* listed Georgian Country House).
• Planning Permission, Listed Building Consent and Scheduled Monument Consent were all approved for the alteration and extension to Widdington Hall (grade II listed, Medieval Hall House).
• Company Secretary and CDM Co-ordinator Peter attended a seminar organised by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health preparatory to arranging for KPTA to be assessed as complying with the requirements of BS/EN/OHSAS18001. This is the latest specification for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.
• Architectural Designer, Nicola was in Chichester, as part of her MSc in Timber Building Conservation, studying this month the Repair of Timber Structures.
• Senior Interior Designer, Sarah, was in Buckingham for part of November, continuing her MA in Decorative Arts and Historic Interiors
• Members of staff and their partners, celebrated their annual KPT Christmas Outing by spending a very pleasant evening in Cambridge. We ate a hearty dinner at The Chop House, followed by a visit to the Cambridge Arts Theatre, to see Noel Coward’s “Star Quality”, starring Golden Globe Winner Amanda Donahoe.
• Architect Monica successfully completed her probationary period, and was welcomed as a permanent member of staff.
• Architect Maria is busy writing essays for her MSc in Conservation of the Historic Environment, the latest being on Conservation legislation.
• Architect Anthony was delighted to become the grandfather of a beautiful baby girl, called Orla, on 1st November. Orla is the fourth granddaughter of Anthony and his wife, Martine.
• Architect Monica and her husband Alistair celebrated the first birthday of their gorgeous daughter, Ailsa.
