January News from Kay Pilsbury Thomas Architects

Amazingly we are already at the start of February, and 2014 is galloping along at a pace.

Below is just a taster of what the KPTA team has been up to during an extremely wet and windy January.

  • We have submitted an application for Planning Permission for a new garage and garden store within the curtilage of a Grade II Listed house in Cambridgeshire.
  • An application for Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent has been prepared for some internal reordering of a Grade II Listed, C.16th Farmhouse in Essex, and will be submitted very soon.
  • We are assisting the owner of a vacant plot within the Waltham Abbey Conservation Area with the feasibility of re-developing the site.
  • A survey has been undertaken of a Grade II Listed timber framed Hall House in Essex, and we are preparing Survey Drawings.
  • Concept Design Drawings have been completed for a private leisure facility for a Grade II Listed Georgian villa in Cambridgeshire.
  • As part of The Big Project, Phase 1, the PCC of the delightful Victorian Church of St Michael & All Angels’ Church, Galleywood, is proposing to relocate its organ to a new organ gallery at the West tower. The vacant North transept is proposed as a new multi-use space, with a mezzanine floor above. We have designed new oak screens, with decorative carved lower panels and frameless glass above, to infill the existing arches. Currently out to tender, the works are expected to start mid-2014.
  • We are working with the owner of a timber framed property in South Cambridgeshire, to develop Concept Designs for a new staircase, internal re-ordering and a new single storey extension.
  • Works at the stunning C.15th Hall House in Essex are in the rectification period.
  • We are currently preparing and producing Planning and Listed Building application documents for works to an C.18th Essex Barn, and we’re waiting for an Ecology report and Structural report to be completed before we submit this application.
  • Concept Design Drawings have been produced for works to an C.18th thatched cottage in Essex, and we are currently in pre-application discussion with the Conservation Officer.
  • We have submitted an application for Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent for an ancillary pool building to a Grade II Listed Arts and Crafts house in Essex. We expect a decision to be made within the next month.
  • A Planning Permission application has been submitted for ground and first floor rear extensions to a C.18th house in Essex, and we expect a decision within a month.
  • Concept Design Drawings are now completed for works to a Grade II Listed, C.19th Essex School House, which is currently in a bad state of repair.
  • Survey Drawings are currently being prepared for a C.17th Grade II* Vicarage in Essex.
  • We are working closely with the Local Food & More co-operative to produce designs and concepts for the proposed cafĂ©, within a C.19th Essex barn.
  • The Retreat House, Pleshey, is now progressing with the scheme to add an Orangery extension, overlooking the gardens; and to upgrade their facilities for the Disabled. The works are to commence on site in late spring, and should enhance the ambience of this delightful retreat.
  • Monica, Richard and Sibyl have been to visit some charming and beautiful properties, discussing aspirations and ideas with prospective clients. We hope that these lovely properties will feature in our news very soon.
  • KPTA has been assessed as meeting the requirements of BS OHSAS 18001:2007 for its occupational health and safety systems and procedures.
  • BS OHSAS 18001:2007 is an internationally recognised occupational health and safety management system that promotes a safe and healthy working environment by providing a framework that helps organizations to consistently identify and control health and safety risks, reduce the potential for accidents, aid legislative compliance and improve overall performance. These systems and procedures cover our own working practices but, more importantly, help to ensure that our projects are safe to build and safe to live and work in.
  • We are delighted to announce that our entry of Finchingfield Guildhall for the RICS Building Conservation and RICS Community Benefit Awards, 2014 has been short listed for both sections.
  • Monica attended a very interesting CPD on integrating services into Historic Buildings. Something that comes with most of our workload!
